The WTA tournament from Dubai (also known as the Dubai Open) is a new tennis tournament, ranked this year as a Premier event. The WTA tournament is played one week before the start of the ATP event. The first edition was held in 2001 and it was won by Martina Hingis. Since then, the tournament has evolved to a Premier 5 ranking, but now it alternates this ranking with the similar event in Doha (Premier to Premier 5), each year. The tournament is played at the modern Aviation Club Tennis Centre on outdoor hardcourts. Justine Henin holds the record for most title wins (4), followed by Venus Williams (3). The prize money varies from year to year, as the ranking of the event switches from Premier to Premier 5. The total prize money for the 2018 edition stands at $2,623,485, according to the official site.
