The Sydney International is one of the oldest tennis tournaments in the world, being played for the first time in 1885. The event is also known as the New South Wales Open or as Apia International Open (due to sponsorship reasons). Like many other Australian tournaments, it started on outdoor grass courts and later switched to hardcourts (since 1989). The event is considered the last training ground before the start of the Australian Open. NSW Tennis Centre in Sydney will be hosting the tournament, Ken Rosewall Arena being the maincourt (10,000 seats). A few former no 1 players won the title in Sydney: Roger Federer, Pete Sampras and Lleyton Hewitt. However, the tournament is attended by middle ranked players. Last year's defending champion is Gilles Muller.
